Treevers were originally designed to satisfy one very picky Weimaraner named Sandi. Sandi liked to swim and loved to retrieve, but she was particular about what she would carry in her mouth. Sandi only liked soft toys, and she wouldn’t even consider picking up a toy made out of rubber or plastic.
The problem was finding a soft toy that had any durability at all. Most of the soft toys on the market would tear the first time Sandi applied any pressure whatsoever. These tears seemed to always reveal some type of foam or synthetic stuffing, which certainly didn’t seem like it would be safe for her to swallow.
So, Sandi’s owner, Ed Tucker, set out to create something that Sandi would love to play with, but would still hold up well when used by a strong, active dog like Sandi. After some time, Ed had a few ideas that he thought would address all of their concerns. By using dual-layer construction, a product could be made that used a strong material on the inside, while using something nice and soft for the outside. For the inner layer, Ed decided to use a layer of heavy-duty canvas, which is a full 2.5mm thick. For the outer layer, he decided to use neoprene. Neoprene is soft, performs great in the water, and allows us to make Treevers in so many wonderful colors.
Of particular concern was what type of material should be used as stuffing. Ed wanted to make sure the material would be functional, but safe at the same time. The perfect solution presented itself in the form of all-natural granulated cork. Cork is non-toxic, naturally mold and mildew resistant, and provides unparalleled floatability. Basically, cork is the perfect filling for a retrieving toy for dogs. To learn more about our construction process, please check out our Constructions and Benefits page.
From the very first prototype, Sandi loved her Treevers toy, and it just seemed to last and last. Before long, friends and even strangers were asking for the product. That’s when we decided to make Treevers available for everyone.
